Community Helpers: Tequesta Fire Rescue

Today, the Banting family was driven to school in a vehicle quite larger and louder than their regular car. The entire school enjoyed the excitement as Tequesta’s Fire Rescue escorted the Bantings to Good Shepherd.

At Good Shepherd, we build the importance of community helpers into our curriculum. From a firefighter or paramedic, to or doctor or nurse, to a teacher or principal – we teach our students the vital role that our community helpers play in society and our everyday life.

Why is it important for children to meet community helpers like firefighters?

Reducing Fear in Emergencies  —  In a real emergency, a firefighter in full gear could be frightening to a small child. By meeting them in a calm classroom setting, children learn that under all that gear is a kind person there to help.

Building Safety Literacy  —  When children know who the safe adults are, they feel more secure in their community. These visits often include practical lessons, like “Stop, Drop, and Roll” or how to dial 911. Which helps teach children that help is always available, and importantly, how to access it.

Career Inspiration & Community Pride  —  For some children, this is their first exposure to the concept of a career. Seeing men and women from their own neighborhood in these roles makes the idea of serving their community real. And children start to see themselves as part of a larger team that keeps the town running.

Thank you to Tequesta’s Fire Rescue team for today – and every day!
